KUALA LUMPUR: Though porn website RedTube has been blocked by regulator Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), some users may still be able to access it as Internet service providers (ISP) need time to reconfigure their networks.

The commission monitoring and enforcement division senior director Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin said ISPs were issued a directive to block the website last week.

“It is not that they are not complying, but they have to configure their network to block it and for some providers, this takes time because of technical issues.

Some providers also have different technical capabilities and this also takes time,” he told The Malaysian Insider yesterday.

A report last Sunday said access to the website had been blocked since Dec 19.

Those who clicked on it were redirected to a page with the warning: “This website is not available in Malaysia as it violates national law”.

MCMC has shut down or blocked at least 1,400 websites, including filesharing websites, in the country, most of the time after receiving numerous complaints.

Communications and Multimedia minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabeery Cheek had said this year that 1,225 complaints were received on inappropriate content online, but that number is only 0.006% of the 19.2 million of Internet users in the country.

“So we have taken action, including closing 1,400 websites that are inappropriate.” he had said.

It was reported last week that statistics by online adult video company Pornhub revealed that Internet users in Kuala Terengganu spent an average of 12 minutes and 58 seconds looking at or searching for visual pornography.

Internet users in Kuala Lumpur were the second highest (12:29 minutes), followed by Kota Baru and Miri (both at 12:27 minutes). — The Malaysian Insider
