KUALA LUMPUR (April 30): Individuals aged between 20 and 29 showed the highest Covid-19 cases incidence rate in the country per 100,000 population so far this year, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in a tweet.

Based on data provided from Jan 1, 2021 until April 27, those who aged between 20 and 29 recorded a Covid-19 incidence rate of 1,406, followed by those in the age group of 30 to 39 (1,341), those in the age group of 40 to 49 (867) and those in the age group of 50 to 59 (661).

Meanwhile, those who aged between 60 and 69 reported a Covid-19 incidence rate of 536, followed by those in the age group of 10 to 19 (482), those in the age group of 70 to 79 (417), those who aged 80 years old or above (406) and those in the age group of zero to nine (343).

According to the Centers for Disease, Control and Prevention (CDC), an incidence rate describes how quickly disease occurs in a population.

As for the number of Covid-19 cases in total for the period of Jan 1 to April 27, MoH data shows that individuals aged between 30 and 39 reported the highest number of cases due to the pandemic at 81,830, followed by 79,081 cases from those in the age group of 20 to 29, and 38,673 cases from individuals aged between 40 and 49.

Overall, Malaysia reported a Covid-19 cases incidence rate of 834, with 285,441 cases recorded in the four-month period.

In separate data, the MoH said the current Covid-19 infectivity rate, or R-nought, was down to 1.12 from its high of 1.19 on April 17.

R0, an indicator of how contagious the infection is, shows the average number of people who contracts the disease from a single infected person.

Malaysia had recorded daily new infections of four digits since the start of this year before dropping to 941 cases on March 29.

However, the trend of daily new cases then continued to show an upward trend until breaching the 3,000 mark for the first time in two months on Wednesday with 3,142 infections.

Yesterday, Malaysia reported 3,332 new cases, marking the second straight day of the tally staying above the 3,000 mark. This brought the number of active cases higher to 28,093.

To date, total Covid-19 infections in the country stood at 404,925.
