China-based telecommunications network solutions provider Huawei recently signed an agreement with four local universities to launch the MSC Malaysia — Huawei Scholastic Award incentive scheme to promote talent growth in the Malaysian telecommunication industry.

The partnership also involves Multimedia Development Corp (MDeC), which will be providing industry-relevant skills to enhance the employability and marketability of the undergraduates through its MSC Malaysia K-Workers Development Initiative, according to a July 19 press release.

Under the agreement, 88 qualified telecommunication and ICT (Information, Communication and Technology) undergraduates from Multimedia University, University of Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia  and Universiti Teknologi Mara will attend a month-long classroom and practical job training under the MSC Malaysia Job Camp. Those who successfully complete the training will then go on an educational visit to Huawei’s facilities in China. The scholastic award also includes a combination of cash awards.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and MDeC CEO Datuk Badlisham Ghazali witnessed the signing of the MoU on July 19 in Kuala Lumpur.

Huawei Malaysia managing director Dai Jingyue says the initiative is part of Huawei’s ongoing “Telecom Seed for the Future” CSR programme.

“We believe sustainable business growth is the foundation for carrying out greater CSR. Huawei is committed to develop and promote the long-term development of Malaysia’s ICT industry,” he says in the press release.

In 2002, Huawei established a regional training centre in Malaysia and last year, supported the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s (MOSTI) 12-month industry internship programme through curriculum development and endorsement of certification programmes.

Badlisham said MDeC hopes to see more participation from the industry on similar initiatives to help align  our local talent with the latest technology and developments.
