KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 11): The Home Ministry and police are set to discuss the allegation made by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that Datuk Seri Najib Razak attempted to bribe him so that he would keep quiet over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

However, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the strength of the evidence would determine whether a formal investigation would begin.

“That is the prerogative of the authorities and I will discuss the matter with the inspector-general of police, but it depends on how strong the evidence is,” said Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister, while speaking to reporters at the Umno general assembly today.

On Dec 9, Dr Mahathir claimed in a blog posting that Najib had offered him a bribe in return for his silence on 1MDB.

"Najib regularly came to see me and asked what I wanted. I thought about it and sincerely mentioned development projects," Dr Mahathir wrote in his Dec 9 post.

"Then I realised he was trying to bribe me, so that we would not bring up 1MDB issues."

Dr Mahathir has been Najib’s most vociferous critic from within Umno ranks, and has not held back in making his disdain public, including demanding the prime minister's resignation.
