KUALA LUMPUR (July 2): Former Umno vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the ruling government should ensure all MPs and their family members in Pakatan Harapan (PH) have declared their assets before enforcing it on others.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby today, Hishammuddin pointed out that certain Pakatan Harapan MPs, including one deputy minister, have not declared assets owned by their families.

"Before the motion was made yesterday, there are still 12 opposition MPs who have not declared their assets, 22 others (including some in PH) have not declared assets for their families, including one senator who is a deputy minister," said Hishammuddin, who is the former defence minister before the change of government in May last year.

"So asking the opposition to do something is like a fishing expedition to me, you have to lead by example, prove to us that you are sincere, that what you are trying to do is really transparent for the sake of the public, because you are in power, we are not, so you want to fish our asset, for what reason?

"The government MPs will have to prove themselves first," he commented.

Yesterday, Dewan Rakyat, in the name of transparency and accountability, passed a special motion today that forces MPs to make statutory declarations for their assets to the Speaker before Oct 1 this year.

The asset declaration motion, passed in Dewan Rakyat yesterday, compels MPs, their spouses and children, as well as trustees, to declare their assets by Oct 1.
