PUTRAJAYA (April 27): The Ministry of Health is no longer facing a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) stockpile for healthcare workers combating the Covid-19 virus in the frontlines.

The ministry’s director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the government continuously engages with suppliers to ensure that the procurement is ongoing.

"There is no shortage at the moment, the procurement is ongoing. We actually have a monitoring system in place [for PPE] in all of the hospitals. I would think that we have enough PPE so far," he said during his daily Covid-19 media briefing today.

On April 13, Noor Hisham mentioned that the supply for PPE in the country could only last for two more weeks. At the time, he urged those who have been donating PPE to continue doing so.

He said the usage of PPE has risen 10-fold since Covid-19 hit Malaysia and it was critical to ensure a steady supply, so that efforts to contain the pandemic are not disrupted.

However, none of the healthcare workers who contracted the coronavirus so far have been tested positive, as a result of attending to Covid-19 patients at healthcare facilities.
