KUALA LUMPUR (April 30): Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has today revealed that the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the relaxation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) will be announced soon.

However, he stressed that even in the fourth phase of the MCO, Malaysia will continue strengthening its border control, in order to contain imported cases into the country.

On this, Noor Hisham noted that the number of new daily imported cases may be a cause for concern.

For instance, Malaysia saw 25 new imported cases out of 57 new Covid-19 positive infections today.

"Border control is an important [aspect of the MCO] and now that we are in the fourth phase of the MCO, [border control] will be further tightened.

"But in terms of movement restrictions, there will be some relaxation and we are now discussing the specific SOPs that each sector will be required to adhere to. This will be announced in the near future," Noor Hisham said today during his daily Covid-19 press briefings.

He pointed out that Malaysia's approach on this is different compared with other countries, whereby border controls were also relaxed when their movement restrictions were lifted.

Nevertheless, Noor Hisham urged Malaysians to cooperate and keep practicing the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health, such as maintaining social discipline by keeping a safe social distance and a high level of self-hygiene.

"We have succeeded [in reducing the number of daily cases] because of the movement restrictions. The movement restrictions were imposed to avoid having a surge in the number of new cases, and today we have seen the number declining and it has been [in the] double digits for more than a week.

"So, we have to continue with our practice," he added.
