KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 22): The government's newly announced allocation to Tanjung Piai ahead of the by-election there is merely a coincidence, not a vote buying campaign, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"Before we name the candidate, we execute our duty as usual, we made allocation anyway, but this allocation is a coincidence, where there is a by-election there," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

"If we make the allocation during campaign, then it is not good. Usually we have plans for allocation everywhere, but we will try our best not to use these allocations as bait for people to vote [for] us," he added.

Earlier this week, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak posted on social media that the RM7.3 million allocation for public projects in Tanjung Piai were announced in less than a week.

These projects include RM4 million on sports facilities, RM3 million for jetties upgrade, installation of 264 street lamps worth RM127,776, and RM230,000 grant for village chiefs.
