KUALA LUMPUR (March 17): PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli disclosed that the federal government has paid a US$20 million cash as downpayment for a new official private jet, costing nearly RM465.41 million.

"Late yesterday, the Prime Minister’s office sent out a statement acknowledging the purchase of this new jet," said Rafizi at Parliament lobby today.

Yesterday (Monday, March 16), Rafizi claimed that the federal government had purchased a new official private jet, ACJ320, in December last year.

He also claimed it would normally be used by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, since it was the latest model as compared to the other six private jets that are owned by the federal government.

Today, Rafizi said a letter of offer signed by the federal government, and a private company Jet Premier One (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, showed US$20 million has been paid as deposit for the jet, costing RM465.41 million.

He said the letter also states that a hefty sum of US$679,984.00 (RM2.217 million; at RM3.261 per US dollar at the time of the purchase) will be paid by the federal government as monthly installments — inclusive of interest — for a period of 15 years for the purchase.

Rafizi was astonished by the lavish spending of the federal government in the jet purchase when presidents and Prime Ministers of other countries would normally fly with their national airlines for official functions.

Hence, he said Najib and his entourage, including his family members, should do the same and support the country's national carrier, Malaysia Airlines.
