(July 8): Datuk Seri Najib Razak should go on leave of absence immediately, given the latest disclosure of banking documents by The Wall Street Journal which purportedly show huge sums of money going into the prime minister's personal accounts, PKR Youth said today.

Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said this was necessary to allow for a transparent and credible investigation to be carried out.

He also urged Najib and his defenders to clarify the issues raised in order to clear his name.

"These documents, if true, are extremely disturbing and cast a dark shadow on Najib’s integrity as well as that of our country’s governance and banking system," Nik Nazmi said in a statement.

A Royal Commission of Inquiry should be set up to investigate the matter, he added.

"Justice must be done and seen to be done if the rule of law means anything in Malaysia."

WSJ, which broke the news about US$700 million (RM2.67 billion) of funds going into Najib’s private bank accounts, has now posted documents online showing the money trail.

Despite growing calls for Najib to step aside pending investigations, retired attorney-general Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman has said there was no legal requirement to compel the prime minister to do so. – The Malaysian Insider
