KUALA LUMPUR (June 17): The glove sector is still relevant despite lower average selling prices and higher operating costs, said Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz.

"Malaysia is one of the biggest producers of gloves. Right now, they are experiencing a decline in sales as most countries are now opening up and moving from the [Covid-19] pandemic to the endemic [stage].

"But I believe they (rubber glove producers) have their own plans on how to maintain their business in the market and explore new markets," Mustafa told The Edge after the 18th Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS 2022) on Friday (June 17), organised by MATRADE.

In addition, MATRADE deputy chief executive officer for export acceleration Sharimahton Mat Saleh said there is growth for gloves in other areas, not just medical products.

"What I have heard from the big [glove] manufacturers is that they are also going into industrial use. Gloves are not just for medical purposes. [For instance,] food service also uses gloves. [I think] there is some growth potential [for gloves] in other areas. Gloves are still growing," she added.
