KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan has filed a summons in court challenging the constitutionality of the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code, in a bid to stop the PAS-led Kelantan government from enforcing hudud in the state.

Its Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said the party was resorting to legal action because neither DAP nor PKR had shown any sincere effort to stop the Kelantan state legislative assembly from tabling amendments to the hudud enactment yesterday.

“The Gerakan legal team has filed in the Kota Baru High Court, an Originating Summons against the Kelantan state to challenge the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code to be unconstitutional.

“We believe there are no provisions in our Federal Constitution for the implementation of hudud laws in Malaysia. It was also never agreed when Malaysia was formed,” said Tan in a statement yesterday. — The Malaysian Insider
