KUALA LUMPUR (July 1): Videos of a fire at Genting Malaysia Bhd's new indoor theme park, the Skytropolis Funland, which just opened about eight months ago, have gone viral on social media and WhatsApp.

The seven-second and 13-second videos show fire engulfing the landscaping that had plastic flowers near the escalators, according to The Star.

Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue Department officer Yusry Abdullah Sani was quoted as saying the incident occurred at 6.13pm today.

"A fire engine, eight personnel from the Genting Highlands Fire and Rescue station, as well as 12 personnel from the Genting Highlands Fire Unit responded to the blaze.

"The space near the escalator corridor between the indoor theme park and a hotel here was on fire," he reportedly said.

He added that when they arrived, the fire had engulfed the landscaping there and that the team used a fire hose and seven fire extinguishers to put out the blaze.

"The cause of the fire is being investigated by our forensics unit," he said.

Some six months ago on Jan 6, it was reported that a small fire broke out at a shopping mall in Genting Highlands from a suspected wire short-circuit. Luckily, no casualties were reported.

Genting Malaysia’s shares closed four sen or 1.23% higher at RM3.28 today, giving it a market capitalisation of RM19.48 billion. Over the past 12 months, the stock has fallen some 29% from when it was trading at RM4.59 a share.
