FGV eyes 3.5% local fragrant rice market share by end-2025

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 13): FGV Holdings Bhd aims to capture a 3.5% share of the local fragrant rice market by the end of 2025 under the group's household brand Saji.

In a statement on Wednesday, FGV said this would be made possible with the implementation of the Fortified Field Fragrant Rice (3FR) programme by its subsidiary FGV Integrated Farming Holdings Sdn Bhd, which optimises local fragrant rice paddy farming through smart and effective agriculture practices and technologies.

FGV group chief executive officer Mohd Nazrul Izam Mansor said the group also plans to expand its fragrant paddy farming area to 10,000 hectares in the next five years.

“FGV is committed to increasing the self-sufficiency level (SSL) of rice production in Malaysia through our 3FR programme, which is in support of the Large-Scale Smart Paddy Field Programme (Smart SBB) initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries.

"Smart SBB is expected to help the country achieve 75% of the SSL of rice production as set in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP),” he said.

Additionally, rice farmers would also be able to boost their incomes as a single fragrant paddy crop offers a return of RM1,540 per tonne, compared to the ordinary paddy which is sold at RM1,200 per tonne.

FGV’s 3FR programme is being implemented in 500 hectares of granary fields in the integrated agricultural development area (IADA) of Barat Laut, Selangor, and 100 hectares in IADA Seberang Perak, Perak, involving 260 appointed local contract farmers.

The 3FR programme combines FGV’s expertise in enhanced field performance through Agriculture 4.0 and precision farming, which are economical and sustainable.

“This includes mechanisation, utilising drones, use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in farming applications, field sensors, pest and disease control, and automated transplanting machines.

“All by-products from the fragrant paddy farms and rice mills, such as rice bran and rice husks, are not wasted, and are used as components of FGV’s animal feed brand ALMA,” added Mohd Nazrul.
