KUALA LUMPUR (June 23): The FBM KLCI rose sharply in the final trading minutes to close 2.02 points or 0.1% higher, as investors bought Genting Malaysia Bhd shares.

The KLCI rose amid quieter but volatile broader market trades ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays, starting this Sunday. Malaysian markets will be closed on Monday and Tuesday for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Today, the KLCI closed at 1,779.45 points at 5pm. Genting Malaysia shares rose 27 sen to RM5.83 to become Bursa Malaysia's fifth-largest gainer.

TA Securities Holdings Bhd senior technical analyst Stephen Soo told theedgemarkets.com: “Despite closing higher, the trading session on the FBM KLCI was quite dull, reflecting the absence of most market players, due to the upcoming festive season and extended holiday period early next week."

Across Bursa Malaysia, 1.31 billion shares valued at RM1.54 billion were traded. Gainers outpaced decliners at 410 versus 306 respectively.

Yesterday, the bourse saw 1.64 billion shares, worth RM1.8 billion transacted.
