FUNCTIONAL and timeless — this is what describes the much anticipated collaboration between Japanese casual wear mega-retailer Uniqlo and French designer Christophe Lemaire’s eponymous label.

The fall collection centres on knits and outerwear, with a line-up comprising a total of 55 styles (30 women’s and 25 men’s). Muted and minimalist, the collection seamlessly carries both Uniqlo’s vision and Lemaire’s aesthetics.

Going back to basics, the collection emphasises material and lines, from lambswool cardigans and sweaters, to knitted turtlenecks, elegant rayon tops and work dresses, cashmere trousers and convertible coats.

The former Hermes and Lacoste creative director creates styles that have a sense of masculine gloomy chic, with utilitarian detailing on the pockets and a stark silhouette, both symmetrical and asymmetrical. A short coat with removable sleeves and a layered jacket emphasises the functionality of the collection.

In contrast to the heavier and structured pieces, there are the classic-style flowy rayon tops and dresses. Mostly in dark earthy tones such as black, navy, brown, grey and teal, the collection is created to mix-and-match with white and cream tops, and even a splash of red.

There are already plans for collaboration on a Spring/Summer collection next year, and judging from this one, it is something we look forward to.

Uniqlo and Lemaire’s fall/winter 2015 collection is now available at Farenheit 88’s Uniqlo store, as well as online at www.uniqlo.com/uniqloandlemaire. Prices range from RM199 to RM1,000.
