KUALA LUMPUR (June 12): The government has appointed former World Bank senior adviser Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Bakar as the new Treasury Secretary-General effective immediately.

Ismail, 58, takes over the position from Tan Sri Mohammad Irwan Serigar Abdullah, who was transferred from the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to the Public Service Department and whose service contract ends on Thursday.

Ismail graduated from the University of Hull in the UK with a doctorate in business management, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa said in a statement.

Ismail has vast experience in economic and currency management, having served in the civil service for 32 years, beginning at the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Service in January 1986, said Ali.

Ismail once served as a director for national budget in the state budget office within MoF.

Other responsibilities undertaken previously include as secretary-general at the Ministry Agriculture and Agro-based Industries and the Ministry of Transport.

"I believe with the knowledge, experience and credibility exemplified by Ismail, he can perform his responsibility effectively and continue MoF's vision as the strategic leader of financial and economic successes to ensure sustainable growth for the prosperity of the nation and her people," said Ali.
