(June 18): Former Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong has been appointed to head Malaysia’s tourism board, taking over the post from Tan Sri Ng Yen Yen, according to reports.

The 61-year-old will now be the chairman of Tourism Malaysia.

"It came as a surprise and I am really honoured,” the lawyer was quoted as saying.

The report said Wee, who was formerly with DAP and then PKR, welcomed the "uphill challenge" to improve on Malaysia's bruised image.

He also said that he would be meeting with Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz as his first task as chairman of the board.

"Then, I would rally the respective tourism directors here and abroad, and see how best we can move ahead. We (the tourism industry) have taken a severe beating, but I shall not delve into it," he was quoted as saying.

Wee was elected as MP for Kuala Lumpur Bandar (now called Bukit Bintang) in 1990 but was removed from his seat after a court case. He was dismissed from DAP eight years later and formed the Malaysian Democratic Party.

He lost in the 2004 election and joined PKR in 2008, winning the Wangsa Maju seat in the election that year. He left PKR in 2010 and did not contest in the last polls in 2013. – The Malaysian Insider
