PARIS (June 17): AirAsia, Malaysia's low-cost carrier, today unveiled its first Airbus A330neo, the first of its new generation long-haul fleet, at the 53rd International Paris Air Show.

AirAsia X Group CEO Nadda Buranasiri said the arrival of the A330neo increases its ability to bring new destinations into play.

"Direct flights to Europe and the US are now possible. We are working on many exciting network and product plans to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by this aircraft’s extended range and significant cost efficiencies, which will be announced in due course," he said at the unveiling of the aircraft here today.

Buranasiri said that the aircraft will be based at Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport in Thailand, facilitating growth and network expansion plans to key markets such as Australia, Japan and South Korea.

"This is a significant milestone for the aviation industry, and importantly for our guests. The new planes will revolutionise the long-haul, value air travel market," he said.

AirAsia currently has 66 aircraft on direct order and an agreement to purchase an additional 34, and the A330neo would enhance the guest experience with the latest design features and new modifications to make medium- to long-haul value air travel more comfortable than ever.

The 53rd International Paris Airshow is happening today until June 23 at the Le Bourget exhibition centre in Paris.

It is the world's largest aerospace event, involving 2,400 exhibitors from 50 countries with 150 aircraft. — Bernama
