KUALA LUMPUR (May 8): The Energy Commission (EC) says Datuk Azian Osman is now its new chairman, replacing Datuk Ahmad Fauzi Hassan, who retired on March 31 after two years with the commission.

In a statement, the EC said the appointment, which was made with the agreement of the Prime Minister,  takes effect today.

Azian, a lawyer by training, started his career as an advocate and solicitor in 1986. He has wide experience in the legal field and the management of companies, according to the EC, and had once served as a member of the Malaysian Bar's disciplinary committee (2002-2005).

Formerly the chairman of the National Housing Development Company or Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB) under the Minister of Finance Inc, Azian also used to lead Giatmara Malaysia, an agency under the Ministry of Rural Development that aims to provide technical and vocational skills training to youths in rural areas.

He previously also spent four years as a member of the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority.
