KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 11): Eight new Covid-19 clusters were reported in the country today, bringing the total number of clusters to 594.

The new clusters include the Jalan Keluli workplace cluster in Kota Tinggi, Johor Bahru and Segamat in Johor where Covid-19 infections were detected after targeted screening at a factory in the Pasir Gudang industrial area.

As of noon today, 42 out of 180 people from this cluster who underwent screening tested positive for Covid-19.

Another workplace cluster reported today is Medan Idaman, which involves individuals living in the Cheras and Titiwangsa districts of Kuala Lumpur. Positive cases from this cluster were detected on Jan 6 after a targeted screening at a supermarket. As of today, 84 people have been screened and there were 10 positive cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said eight positive cases were detected from the Jelita cluster in Miri, Sarawak after 54 people underwent screening after one individual was found infected on Jan 5 after travelling from Melaka.

"The name of the cluster reflects the temporary residence of the index case located at Taman Jelita, Miri."

Another new cluster announced today is Renok based in Gua Musang, Kelantan. The index case tested positive for Covid-19 on Jan 2 and had a history of returning from Selangor.

The cluster's name refers to the place where the cases have emerged, namely Kampung Renok Baru, Gua Musang. A total of 73 individuals have been screened as of today, and 23 of them were found to be positive.

Another cluster identified in Kelantan is Kampung Geting in Tumpat. The index case for this cluster tested positive for Covid 19 on Jan 6 after having travelled to Penang. Altogether, 11 out of 35 individuals who underwent screening at this cluster tested positive.

Also reporting 11 positive cases was the Lumut Barat cluster, involving a camp in Manjung, Perak. The index case for this cluster was found to be positive for the virus on Jan 1, after returning from Kuala Lumpur. A total of 21 individuals in this cluster have undergone Covid-19 screening.

In Terengganu, the Kubang Bujuk cluster involving a religious education centre in Kubang Bujuk, Kuala Terengganu saw 10 positive cases after 45 people underwent screening.

Also in Terengganu, the Kejaya cluster in Dungun, involving a community in Felda Kerteh 4, Ketengah Jaya, saw nine positive cases after 95 people were screened.

Dr Noor Hisham said the total number of active clusters in the country is 258, with 68 of them reporting additional cases today, led by Tembok Choh (157 cases), Teratai (83 cases) and Beringin (48 cases).

Another four clusters were declared to have ended today, bringing to 336 the number of clusters that have ended. The four clusters are Jalan Kemang, Taman Bunga, Damar Laut and Awan Baru construction site.
