KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 9): Electronic manufacturing service provider EG Industries Bhd expects its RM180 million Smart Factory 4.0 in Batu Kawan, Penang, to potentially create more than 1,000 high-value jobs for the local community upon its commencement in 2024.

In a statement on Wednesday (Nov 9), EG Industries said that its first fully automated Lights-Out Smart Factory 4.0 will be situated on a six-acre (2.43-hectare) industrial land in Batu Kawan under its unit SMT Technologies Sdn Bhd.

It said the lights-out methodology would create a completely networked environment that digitises material flows for autonomous manufacturing, controlled by a remote team of highly specialised experts to manage data, production planning and quality.

At the official ground-breaking ceremony, EG Industries group chief executive officer Datuk Alex Kang said that the group’s upcoming new facility had recently attracted the attention of a few notable local and foreign customers.

He said that among them are US-based Cambridge Industries Group (CIG) for production of advanced high-speed optical signal transmitters and receivers for 5G wireless networks (optical modules) using photonics and semiconductor technologies for global customers.

He said this would be CIG’s first-ever pioneer technology transfer to Southeast Asia.

Kang added that the Batu Kawan Smart Factory 4.0 is a testament to progression.

“With state-of-the-art technologies, this is not poised to be an ordinary facility, but a highly advanced, fully automated smart factory that will generate tremendous benefits for our customers, stakeholders and country,” he said.

At the midday break on Wednesday, EG Industries had dipped 1.01% or half a sen to 49 sen, with 31,000 shares traded.
