KUALA LUMPUR: With just four days to go before the EdgeWiz Campus Investment Challenge starts on April 20, the online stock market competition has attracted over 4,000 participants from about 70 universities and colleges throughout the country.

The EdgeWiz Campus Investment Challenge 2015 (ECIC ‘15) is a corporate social responsibility initiative by The Edge Media Group to educate a new generation of investors. It is in line with The Edge’s focus on promoting financial literacy and English through The Edge Education Foundation.

The stock trading simulator also incorporates social media and news and aims to help those new to the stock market make informed decisions about investing in equities.

EdgeWiz has been recognised as an investor education tool by the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) under its InvestSmart initiative. ECIC ‘15 was launched on March 30 at the SC, at an event attended by over 100 students from several universities and colleges in the Klang Valley.

The competition offers both team and individual categories. The 4,200 students who had registered as at April 15 include over 250 teams. Tunku Abdul Rahman University College and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman together lead the charge with over 700 students and 64 teams registered as at yesterday. They were followed by HELP University with over 300 students and 43 teams and Inti College with almost 200 students and 14 teams.

Of the public universities, Universiti Sains Malaysia tops the list with 120 students and eight teams. Universities or colleges need to have a minimum of four teams each to qualify for the Top Campus prize.

“A new development in the competition is that instead of a 15-minute delay in stock prices, players will now have access to live stock prices to make their investment decisions. Bursa Malaysia has approved EdgeWiz’s request for access to Bursa’s real-time market information for the purpose of the competition from April 18 to May 15,” said Jeffrey Wong, chief executive officer of EdgeWiz Pte Ltd which developed EdgeWiz.

“As such, players will find the game even more exciting as they learn to trade under real market conditions,” said Wong.

The EdgeWiz Campus Investment Challenge is open to university and college students in Malaysia aged between 18 and 25. Entry is free and players can still register over the next four days at www.edgewiz.com in teams of four or as individuals. The four-week competition starts on April 20 and ends on May 15.

Among the prizes to be won are a cash prize of RM10,000 for the top team and internships of up to six months at the SC for each of the four winning team members. The top individual player will win RM2,000 and an internship of up to six months at the SC.
