KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) has lodged police reports against 62 candidates in the 14th general election (GE14) for failing to declare the expenses they incurred in the polls.

The candidates, comprising 14 who contested for parliamentary seats and 48 for state constituencies, would be barred from entering the legislatures and vote, and cannot stand for any election for five years, EC chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said in a statement.

Under the Election Offences Act 1954, candidates or their agents should have filed the returns of expenditure within 31 days after the GE14 results were gazetted on May 28, Azhar said.

“The EC has lodged police reports against candidates who have failed to submit their statement of expenses, for further action to be taken according to the law,” he said.
