KUALA LUMPUR (April 11): Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir has brushed off suggestions to appoint Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the next Menteri Besar of Johor, saying that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia will propose its own candidate.

Yesterday, Johor Umno chief Datuk Hasni Mohamed said Muhyiddin — who is the Bukit Gambir assemblyman — should be the next menteri besar, stressing that he has experience as a chief minister as well as a deputy prime minister.

Speaking to reporters after officiating at the Malaysia Autoshow 2019 today, Dr Mahathir said, in response, "It is the winning party which names the Menteri Besar, not the losers. The losers keep quiet."

On Muhyiddin's suitability as a candidate, Dr Mahathir said the home minister had "other jobs to do".

"We will put up a candidate (for MB of Johor)," he added.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian resigned from his post on Monday (April 8).

Following this, Dr Mahathir said the replacement must come from PPBM.
