(July 10): Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad never expected to be "around this long" and is grateful to be able to celebrate his 90th birthday today, reports Malaysiakini.

When the news portal asked about his birthday wish, Dr Mahathir said he hoped to be able to resolve the country's problems.

"If I am still able to move, I hope to continue being active in resolving the problems in the country," the report quoted him as saying at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur.

He also reportedly said his wished every Malaysian would be able to celebrate their 90th birthday.

Accompanying him at during the Friday prayer were his sons, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir, and two grandchildren.

Dr Mahathir is in the spotlight for criticising Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, especially his handling of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

The state investment vehicle has racked up debts of RM42 billion and a few government-linked agencies have been accused of bailing out the firm.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) last Thursday reported that documents showed US$700 million (RM2.67 billion) was moved among government agencies, banks and entities linked to 1MDB.

It added that the money finally ended in the prime minister's personal accounts at the AmBank Private Banking in Kuala Lumpur, in five separate deposits.

Najib denied the allegations, accusing Dr Mahathir of masterminding the latest attack against him. – The Malaysian Insider
