PUTRAJAYA (Feb 1): Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was tickled when asked if former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was gaining popularity and becoming a threat to the government.

Laughing when the question was put to him during a press conference here after the Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting today, the 93-year-old premier said:

"He (Najib) seems to be gaining popularity, with the social media, that is because he provides a lot of stories. Why didn't he do all those things that he asked us to do, when he was in power? If he had done so, he would still become the Prime Minister.

He added: "But one thing is [for] sure, that during his time, when people were arrested — even before being charged — they have to wear baju kuning, sleep in a dark room. But for him, he can still go around making speeches all that, so it shows that we are a fair government. But in his time, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal was thrown into jail. We are not like that, we are not dictatorship. His was kleptocratic dictatorship."
