KUALA LUMPUR (June 6): Detention centres will be targets of further surveillance for Covid-19, according to Ministry of Health (MoH) director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In a media briefing, Noor Hisham said the situation is under control because the ministry can effectively isolate immigration detention depots.

“The situation is under control because there are immigration detention centre depots. However, what we must make sure is to raise our protocols or controls on those infected in such immigration detention centres. We must also look at other detention centres such as remand facilities run by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and prisons. These are areas that are targets for further surveillance,” he said.

He explained that the situation is under control at immigration detention centres as cases can be isolated.

“What we have seen is a rise in cases at immigration detention centres, which are controlled, and those that are positive have been isolated for two weeks. However, those who tested negative in the first round of testing have also been quarantined, and in the second round of testing there are some found to have tested positive,” he said.

In the same vein, the health director-general also announced that in order to ensure greater compliance from foreigners during the conditional movement control order (CMCO) period, the ministry had set up a task force to ensure that more foreigners are actively participating and following the CMCO’s rules and regulations.
