KUALA LUMPUR (April 6): Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Jailani Johari said that he was not informed about any investigation on the "Panama Papers".

"I am not informed whether an action was taken, as I don't have any information," Jailani told reporters in the Parliament lobby.

However, he admitted he has not heard about the Panama Papers nor if there is a request to investigate the Panama Papers; the ministry will take action based on the law if there is such a request.

"If there is request ... if there is any party [making] any complaints, they will take action based on the law.

"If there is an investigation process under way, we cannot do anything, unless the investigation is finished," Jailani told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

He was responding to questions by reporters that a few MPs had called upon the ministry to take action on the Panama Papers, which allegedly named Malaysians who had companies in the offshore tax haven.

Jailani said that he was not informed about any action to be taken on the Panama Papers.

The Panama Papers, dubbed as the largest data leak ever by journalists, has exposed an array of world leaders allegedly involved in tax evasion and money laundering.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's son Mohd Nazifuddin Mohd Najib is among those named in the leaks. However, Mohd Nazifuddin has issued a statement to state that no business activities were carried out in two companies based in the British Virgin Island.

The Iceland Prime Minister Sigmundur Davio Gunnlaugsson is the first leader who resigned from office after it was revealed that his family has sheltered money offshore.
