(July 28): The authorities should declare businessman Low Taek Jho, who has been linked to troubled state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a fugitive, DAP lawmakers said today.

Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi Chuan Aun and Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik said that Low should be named a fugitive if he failed to report to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) within a week.

"The Royal Malaysian Police should list him as 'wanted' and notify Interpol.

"The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission should arrange to suspend his Malaysian passport to place him available in country for questioning by PAC and the special task force," Ooi said at his service centre.

The two MPS said it has been a week since The Edge Financial Daily reported on its front page that RM6.98 billion of Malaysia's money was allegedly cheated by Low and PetroSaudi International through 1MDB from 2009 to 2011.

"Why has there been no action? There has been no denial from Low, PetroSaudi and 1MDB.

"Instead of answering the claim, two publications have been suspended," Ooi said, referring to the three-month suspension on business publications The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily, which had reported extensively on the 1MDB scandal.

It was reported that Malaysian authorities have yet to be able to locate Low, who is popularly known as Jho Low, nearly a month after PAC announced it would summon the business tycoon for questioning as part of its inquiry into 1MDB.

PAC decided earlier this month to call Low after hearing more from the auditor-general about investments made by 1MDB, including its deal with PetroSaudi International.

PAC chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said Low would be summoned over his role as special adviser to Terengganu Investment Authority, the predecessor of 1MDB.

Jazlan said the bipartisan panel did not know the whereabouts of Low, who was not on 1MDB's payroll, but had described himself as an unofficial and occasional consultant,

He said it was up to the Finance Ministry to track him down although Low should be aware that he was required to testify before PAC, as it had been highlighted in the news.

Jazlan added that Low should come forward voluntarily than what to be issued the summons letter. – The Malaysian Insider
