COVID-19 VACCINE DEVELOPMENTS

The US Food and Drug Administration has expanded the emergency use of Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE’s Covid-19 vaccine to include a second booster dose in adults aged 50 years and older who have received a first booster of any authorised Covid-19 vaccine.

People with the “hybrid immunity” of having been both fully vaccinated and previously infected with Covid-19 have the strongest protection against the virus, according to two new studies, AFP reported. One of the two studies published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases medical journal analysed the health data of more than 200,000 people in 2020 and 2021 in Brazil, which has the world’s second-largest  death toll from the virus.

Malaysia’s Covid-19 vaccine development’s proof-of-concept phase involving inactivated virus is expected to conclude in July. Data analysis will then be conducted and is expected to conclude in December, according to Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim.

Vietnam’s health authorities have expanded emergency use authorisation for the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine (Spikevax) to include children from 6 to under 12 years old. The dosage will be 0.25ml, or half the dosage for adults, according to a report  citing the Drug Administration of Vietnam.
