KUALA LUMPUR (May 27): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases dropped to 15 today, the lowest daily figure recorded since May 12, when 16 new cases were reported.

This brought the number of cumulative cases in the country to 7,619, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Of the fifteen new cases, nine were local transmissions in which four cases involved migrant workers, while six were imported cases, according to his statement.

The 15 new cases were found in Kuala Lumpur (six), Selangor (five), Sarawak (three) and Sabah (one).

Meanwhile, the number of active cases dropped to 1,421 from 1,448 reported yesterday, with the patients already isolated and given medical treatment.

Eight patients were being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) today, with four needing respiratory assistance.

Noor Hisham said 42 patients were discharged today, bringing the number of recoveries to 6,083.

Hence, the recovery rate in Malaysia stood at 79.8% of overall cases.

No new death was reported for the fifth consecutive day, so the number of fatalities remained at 115, translating into 1.51% of total cases.

The number of new Covid-19 cases reported today was a reversal of the past two days, where new infections were well above the 100 mark.

According to data given by the Ministry of Health (MoH), 172 new cases were reported on Monday, while 187 cases were reported yesterday.

Based on a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), over 5.6 million of Covid-19 cases resulting in 348,610 deaths had been recorded worldwide as of yesterday.

Malaysia’s cases accounted for 0.14% of all cases, said Noor Hisham.

“However, the MoH is concerned that there may be a rise in Covid-19 cases following gatherings, interstate travels and visits during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration,” he said.

Citing statistics from the Ministry of Defence, Noor Hisham said 18,303 vehicles were caught trying to travel interstate and were ordered to turn back by the Malaysia Royal Police (PDRM).

He urged Malaysians to stay vigilant and continue to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set forth by the MoH.

Three active clusters reported new cases today
Noor Hisham said three active clusters recorded new cases today, namely the Setia Alam construction site with two new cases, the Bukit Jalil immigration depot (one) and the Pudu cluster (one).

The Seri Petaling tabligh cluster, which spanned over five generations, remained the biggest cluster in the country, with 41,260 samples taken of which 3,369 individuals had tested positive.

The MoH also had conducted Covid-19 tests on 378 identified students, teachers and staff of tahfiz schools across the country.

Some 15,064 samples had been taken, in which 684 or 4.5% tested positive for Covid-19. Notably, 588 or 86% were asymptomatic.

Meanwhile, the MoH was also screening 41,435 traders and workers from 390 markets nationwide.

So far, 32,075 samples had been taken from this group and 271 individuals tested positive for Covid-19.

Among old folks' homes, 12,680 residents and staff were being screened.

Some 10,942 samples had been taken where 23 individuals tested positive.

From the total 23 positive cases, 20 cases or 87% showed no symptoms.

Besides, the ministry also had taken samples from three immigration depot clusters up until today, with 1,544 samples taken from the Bukit Jalil immigration depot (282 positive cases), 1,758 samples from the Semenyih immigration depot (66 positive cases) and 1,450 samples from the Sepang immigration depot (36 positive cases).
