Covid-19: Malaysia's daily new cases dip to 54 — lowest since MCO began on March 18, total infections at 5,305

KUALA LUMPUR (April 18): The Ministry of Health (MoH) today reported 54 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, the lowest since the enforcement of the movement control order (MCO) on March 18.

The total infection is at 5,305 in Malaysia — the country with the fourth highest number of Covid-19 infections in Asean, after the Philippines (6,087), Indonesia (6,248) and Singapore (5,992).

This is the third time that Malaysia has reported only double-digit figures for daily new infections. On Wednesday (April 15), there were 85 new cases, and there were 69 new cases on Friday (April 17).

Meanwhile, 135 patients were discharged as of noon today, bringing total recoveries to 3,102 or 58.5% of the total number of positive cases, which now stands at 5,305, according to a statement by the ministry today.

As such, the number of active cases now stands at 2,115 patients, who are all isolated and treated in MoH hospitals across the country.

Currently, there are 49 Covid-19 patients being treated in the intensive care unit, of whom 26 require respiratory assistance.

The MoH reported two new deaths, bringing the death toll in Malaysia to 88, or 1.66% of total cases.

The first death today involved a 60-year-old Malaysian male with a history of hypertension and diabetes. He was treated in Hospital Kuala Lumpur since March 30, until he passed away on April 12.

The 88th death involved a 36-year-old male from Myanmar. He was reported to have been brought to the hospital at a later stage with Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and lung infection. He was pronounced dead on the same day he was brought to the hospital, yesterday.
