KUALA LUMPUR (June 17): Active Covid-19 cases in Malaysia plunged below the 600-mark today to 521 after 140 people recovered and were discharged today, said the Ministry of Health.

This is the lowest since March 17, when active cases stood at 622. Yesterday, the number of patients was 651 after a record 333 people were cured of the disease.

Total recoveries rose to 7,873, representing 92.5% of total cases, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today.

Four people were being treated in intensive care, while fatalities remained at 121 or 1.42% of overall cases.

Meanwhile, new cases dropped to 10, with all of them being local transmissions.

Seven cases involved Malaysians, of which five were detected in Selangor, while two cases were found in Sabah and Sarawak, said Noor Hisham.

According to him, the five cases in Selangor involved four people in an old folks’ home cluster (who had close contacts with patient No. 8,490), while the remaining case was detected during a screening at tahfiz schools.

Meanwhile, the latest case in Sarawak was a family member of patient No. 8,453; another case in Sabah was related to the 120th fatality.

This means only three cases involved foreign workers.

One case detected here was a close contact of patient No. 8,455, while another was a detainee transferred from the Bukit Jalil immigration depot here to the Immigration Academy of Malaysia in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.

Meanwhile, the last case was detected during pre-surgery screening at the Women and Children Hospital in Sabah.

Thus, the country's cumulative cases increased to 8,515.
