KUALA LUMPUR (July 3): Malaysia recorded five new COVID-19 cases today, of which three were imported cases while two were local transmissions, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
This is the fifth straight day Malaysia has experienced a single-digit number of new infections since June 29.
The three imported cases recorded today were found among Malaysians who had returned from Qatar, Turkey and Oman, bringing the total imported cases to 630, said its Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Meanwhile, the two locally-transmitted cases were detected among Malaysians who underwent pre-referral screening at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
This means there were no local transmissions reported among foreigners, noted Noor Hisham in his COVID-19 media briefing today.
The new cases raise Malaysia’s cumulative cases slightly to 8,648.
The number of active cases fell further to 81 from 85 yesterday – the lowest since March 9, when the figure stood at 93.
Nine COVID-19 patients were discharged, bringing the total recovered patients to 8,446 or 97.7% of total cases.
Two patients remain in intensive care, both of them requiring ventilator support.
No death was recorded for 19 days in a row since June 15, thus maintaining the COVID-19 death toll in the country at 121.
Up until noon yesterday (July 2), the Ministry reported 113 new cases detected among Influenza Like-Illness (ILI) patients, Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) patients, and pre-surgery patients.
From ILI patients, 15 positive cases were detected from 2,507 samples, meanwhile 77 positive cases were found among SARI patients from 19,422 samples, while 21 positive cases emerged during pre-surgery screening from 51,870 samples.
