KUALA LUMPUR (April 24): Malaysia reported 88 new cases of Covid-19 today, the eight consecutive day with less than 100 infections.
This brought to 5,691 the total number of cases in the country as at noon today, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
The number of patients discharged for the day was 121. The country has been reporting a higher number of recoveries compared to new cases since the start of the third phase of the movement control order on April 15.
The total number of cured cases in the country since the pandemic started stood at 3,663, representing a recovery rate of 64.4%, Noor Hisham said in his daily televised media briefing on the Covid-19 situation.
One more death was reported today, bringing the death toll to 96, giving a mortality rate of 1.69%
Noor Hisham said that of the 88 new cases, 13 were imported, while the remaining 75 were local transmissions.
He said 39 of the local transmissions involved foreign workers residing in the Selangor Mansion flats in Jalan Masjid India.
The number of active cases in the country fell to 1,932 from 1,966 reported yesterday, with the patients isolated and given treatment.
A total of 41 patients were being treated in the intensive care unit, with 18 of them requiring respiratory assistance.
The deceased was a 61-year-old man who suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney failure, said Noor Hisham.
He had been in close contact with a Covid-19 patient returning from Indonesia. Admitted to Hospital Sungai Buloh, he was pronounced dead at 2.29am today.
Selangor remained the state with the highest number of confirmed infections (with 1,387 cases), followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,115), Johor (655) and Sarawak (468).
Worldwide, more than 2.7 million Covid-19 cases had been reported, with 191,370 deaths.
Within Southeast Asia, Malaysia continued to have the fourth highest number of cases.
Singapore topped the list with 12,075 cases, including 897 new cases reported today, followed by Indonesia with 7,775 cases and the Philippines 7,192 cases.
