KUALA LUMPUR (May 18): Malaysia reported 47 new cases of Covid-19 in the 24-hour period up to noon today, bringing total infections to 6,941. No new death was recorded.

Out of the 47 new cases, 21 were imported cases, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The other 26 cases were local transmissions of which 17 involved non-citizens.

The 47 new cases were detected in Kuala Lumpur (38), Selangor (eight) and Putrajaya (one), Noor Hisham said at his daily Covid-19 media briefing.  

He said the number of active cases increased slightly to 1,213 from 1,210 reported yesterday.

Thirteen patients were being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), with six needing respiratory assistance.

Noor Hisham said 44 patients were discharged in the latest 24-hour period, raising total recoveries to 5,615, or 80.9% of total cases.

Noor Hisham said that with no new death reported from Covid-19, the death toll from the virus remained at 113 in the country, translating into a 1.63% mortality rate.
