KUALA LUMPUR (May 9): Malaysia's daily number of newly confirmed Covid-19 cases fell to 3,733 today from 4,519 yesterday. The country registered today 26 pandemic-related deaths, the highest daily number of Covid-19-linked fatalities on record.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today in an update on Twitter that the latest figure brought the country's cumulative number of Covid-19-infected individuals to 440,677 so far.

The 26 Covid-19-related deaths reported today brought the nation’s cumulative number of pandemic-linked fatalities to 1,683 so far, according to Dr Noor Hisham. “The deceased comprise 25 Malaysians and one foreigner,” he said.

Out of the 3,733 newly confirmed Covid-19-infected individuals reported today, 3,727 cases involved local transmission while six were imported, according to him.

He said the 3,727 local transmission cases comprised 3,301 Malaysians and 426 foreigners.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor reported today the highest daily number of newly confirmed Covid-19 cases with 1,278, followed by Sarawak with 454.

Elsewhere, Johor and Kuala Lumpur recorded 365 and 338 new cases respectively, he said.

Across hospitals nationwide, Dr Noor Hisham said the number of Covid-19 patients being treated at intensive care units stood at 416.

Out of the 416 patients, 216 are intubated to help them breathe, he said.

The total number of active Covid-19 cases across the country stood at 37,060 so far, according to him.

Dr Noor Hisham said the country reported today 3,211 individuals have recovered from Covid-19 and that the figure brought the cumulative number of cases that have recovered to 401,934 so far.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's daily Covid-19 death toll at 26 today is the highest on record since data was compiled when the pandemic was first detected in the country early last year.

Prior to today's record-high Covid-19-related death figure, the previous record-high number of 25 fatalities was registered yesterday (May 8).

In a separate statement, Dr Noor Hisham said the 26 Covid-19-linked deaths reported today involved seven fatalities in Selangor, six in Kuala Lumpur, four in Johor, three each in Kelantan and Pahang, two in Penang and one in Sarawak.

The deceased were aged between 36 and 90 years, according to Dr Noor Hisham.

Dr Noor Hisham said the 36 year old Malaysian woman died at the Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Bahru.

Across Malaysia today, Dr Noor Hisham said 13 new Covid-19 clusters were detected and that the figure brought the total number of pandemic clusters in the country to 1,788 so far.

He said the 13 new clusters included three in Penang, two each in Selangor, Johor and Sarawak and one each in Perak and Negeri Sembilan.
