KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 8): Malaysia reported today its highest number of Covid-19-related deaths in a single day at 16, which brought the cumulative figure of fatalities in the country due to the pandemic to 537 so far. The number of newly-confirmed infected individuals today dropped to 2,643 from a day earlier.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement today the newly-confirmed infected individuals brought the total number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia to 131,108 so far.

Out of the newly-confirmed cases, he said two were imported, while 2,641 involved local transmissions.

“For the local transmission cases, 1,666 cases involved Malaysians, while 975 cases involved non-Malaysians,” he said.

Elaborating on the 16 Covid-19-related deaths reported today, Dr Noor Hisham said the rise in the number of fatalities compared with yesterday was due to deaths which needed some time for further investigations before they could be certified as Covid-19 related.

He said the deceased comprised 13 men and three women aged between 44 and 79 years old.

He said the deceased were all Malaysians.

Nine deaths were reported in Selangor, four in Sabah and three in Johor.
