KUALA LUMPUR (April 23): The number of healthcare workers who contracted COVID-19 has more than doubled to 325 in the past three weeks from 138 on April 3.

Of the infected healthcare workers, 185 of them have recovered and they have been discharged while the remaining 137 are being treated in hospitals, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

However, he said, none of these healthcare workers contracted the deadly virus through attending to COVID-19 patients at healthcare facilities.

According to him, 70% of the positive cases among healthcare workers were linked to attending wedding receptions and some had returned from overseas.

The infection number of 325, including three deaths, is about 5.8% of the country’s 5,603 cumulative positive cases.

Noor Hisham revealed the infected healthcare workers included 77 medical officers, 66 nurses, 34 graduated medical officers, 23 medical experts and 21 assistant medical officers while the remaining 104 were involved in other service schemes.

He has urged the healthcare workers and frontliners to take preventive measures especially in ensuring that their hands are kept clean at all times, practising social distancing, avoiding crowded and confined space and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.

Today, Malaysia reported 71 new cases, bringing the tally of infections in the country to 5,603 cases.

Meanwhile, the number of daily recoveries exceeded the number of daily infections, with 90 cured cases. The total number of recoveries climbed to 3,542 cases or 63.2% of overall cases.

The number of active cases in the country went down to 1,966 – the lowest since March 27 (1,876 active cases).

The death toll from COVID-19 rose to 95 after two more deaths were reported.
