KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 8): The Ministry of Health reported 1,012 new Covid-19 cases, with Selangor being the state with the most new infections at 417 in the 24 hours up till noon today.

Meanwhile, four more deaths were recorded, bringing the total fatalities nationwide to 388.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 185 cases in Selangor were confirmed from other Covid-19 screenings and 116 from screening of close contacts of Covid-19 positive patients.

Furthermore, 115 cases in the most populous state were detected from existing and new Covid-19 clusters, and the other was an imported case, noted Dr Noor Hisham in his statement.

After Selangor, Sabah — the second worst-hit state — recorded 271 cases today, while Johor has 108 cases.

There were 1,750 Covid-19 patients discharged from hospital, bringing total recoveries to 64,056, or 85.1% of all cases.

The number of active cases — which carry high transmission risks — dropped to 10,862 today from 11,604 reported on Monday.

Currently, 126 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units with 62 needing respiratory assistance.

As for the fatalities reported today, all the deaths were reported in Sabah, involving four women aged between 33 and 92 years.

Three of them had health complications such as high blood pressure, hernia, anaemia, osteoarthritis, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.

Among the new infections, only seven were imported cases.

To date, Malaysia’s total cases climbed to 75,306. This means the country has recorded an additional 65,177 confirmed cases since the start of the third wave of Covid-19 infections on Sept 20, from 10,219 total infections then.

Sabah leads all other states with the highest number of infections at 31,057, followed by Selangor (17,255), Kuala Lumpur (7,311) and Negeri Sembilan (6,022).
