KUALA LUMPUR (April 14): Malaysia’s daily recoveries from Covid-19 have topped 200 cases for the third time, with 202 patients discharged as of noon today, against 170 new infections.

According to health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Malaysia’s total recoveries amount to 2,478 cases, or 49.7% of the total confirmed infections, which now stand at 4,987.

Malaysia has recorded 2,079 confirmed infections since the start of the second phase of Movement Control Order (MCO) on April 1, from 2,908 total infections then.

The highest number of daily cases reported during the second phase of the MCO was 217 on March 3, while daily recoveries peaked at 236 cases on April 6.

Currently, 60 cases are being treated in the intensive care unit with 33 of them needing respiratory assistance.

Five more deaths were reported, raising the death toll to 82, representing a 1.64% fatality rate.

The five who passed away were a non-Malaysian, three Malaysian men aged 63, 65 and 81, and a 74-year-old Malaysian woman.

The foreigner, who did not have any personal identification documents, was found dead in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on April 6.

A sample taken from the deceased during a post mortem tested positive for Covid-19.

The case is being investigated by the police.

The remaining four who passed away suffered from a number of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart and kidney diseases.

The woman had close contact with a Covid-19 patient who attended the tabligh gathering at the Seri Petaling mosque.

Selangor remains Malaysia’s worst-hit state, with 1,299 cases after 50 new cases were reported today, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 899 cases after 69 more cases were confirmed.

Johor has the third-highest number of infections at 587 (up eight cases), followed by Sarawak at 363 (up 15 cases) and Negeri Sembilan at 362 (up two cases).
