KUALA LUMPUR (April 2): Malaysia has recorded 122 recovered cases as of noon today, a new daily high in the number of patients who have recovered from Covid-19, bringing the recovery tally to 767, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH). Its previous highest daily recovery rate was 108 cases, which was recorded on Wednesday (April 1).

But the number of new infections per day, which slowed to 142 on Wednesday after it spiked to 235 a week ago, jumped again as of noon today to 208 cases.

This brings the country's total confirmed infections to 3,116, said MoH director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement, since the first case was discovered in the country over two months ago on Jan 25. Of those infected, 105 are now in intensive care, with 54 requiring respiratory support.

Meanwhile, the death toll has also continued to climb, with five new cases added to the total, which now stands at 50.

The new fatalities were all men, with the youngest aged 37. The others were all aged above 60, with the oldest at 85.

The 37-year-old had numerous chronic illnesses and a suppressed immune system. He was treated at Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor, and passed away on March 31.

Two of the deceased — a 78-year-old and an 85-year-old — also passed away in Johor on March 29 and today. The latter had suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Meanwhile, a 61-year-old man who died on April 1 in Sarawak had close contact with another Covid-19 patient. The latest casualty of the disease is a 69-year-old who passed away after spending 11 days at the Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar in Negeri Sembilan.

MoH introduces online appointment system at its clinics

Noor Hisham also announced that the ministry has introduced an online appointment system to reduce overcrowding at its clinics, in line with social distancing practices.

Patients who are not suffering from serious illnesses may choose their appointment times, he said.

The system will be implemented in phases, starting with four clinics that include KK Presint 9, 11, 14 and 18 in Putrajaya together with DoctorOnCall.

Subsequently, it will be expanded to selected clinics in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, in collaboration with Queuemed, EncoreMed, Bookdoc and DoctorOnCall.

Covid-19 in Malaysia to peak in mid-April, says WHO

Reuters reported that the World Health Organization (WHO) is expecting the number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia to peak in mid-April as the infection curve appears to be flattening.

However, it cautioned that the cases could rebound if control measures are eased and people stop taking preventive measures.
