KUALA LUMPUR (June 22): The Ministry of Health (MoH) announced that there were 316 positive Covid-19 cases detected from the Pedas cluster in Negeri Sembilan up until noon today, out of 957 people who have undergone screening for the disease.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 302 cases — which accounted for 96% of all cases in the cluster — involved foreign workers from Nepal (163), Bangladesh (67), Myanmar (35), Indonesia (31), India (four), Vietnam (one), and Cambodia (one).

Meanwhile, only 14 cases involved Malaysians, representing 4% of total positive cases of this cluster.

To recap, this cluster started from Malaysian workers who then spread the disease to foreign workers at a factory in Pedas, he said in his daily statement on the pandemic today.

The cramped and crowded living conditions of these workers have facilitated the spread of the virus among them, he added.

The workers in this cluster have been isolated and do not pose a risk to the community at large; in fact, the 12 new cases were detected during the fifth Covid-19 screening during their quarantine.

On May 2, the ministry identified the new cluster of infections linked to a factory worker in Pedas, Negeri Sembilan.

The index case, who started feeling unwell on April 5, with fever, cough and flu-like symptoms as well as breathing difficulty, was diagnosed with Covid-19 a week later.

Malaysia has reported 15 new cases today, taking the total infections in the country to 8,587.
