KUALA LUMPUR (June 3): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases jumped to 93 today, of which 91 involved non-citizens, while two were Malaysians, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

This brought the total number of infections in the country to 7,970.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the 91 non-citizens were from the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot Centre (55) and the Pedas cluster (36).

Meanwhile, the two cases involving Malaysians were detected through screenings conducted at tahfiz schools as well as markets, Noor Hisham said in his daily media update today.

He said the new cases reported today were all local transmissions with no imported cases recorded.  

Meanwhile, the number of active cases rose to 1,324 from 1,292 reported yesterday, with the patients already isolated and given treatment.

There were six patients in intensive care, with two of them needing respiratory assistance.

Noor Hisham said no deaths were recorded for the 12th consecutive day, maintaining the death toll from the virus at 115, which translates into 1.44% of overall cases.

Meanwhile, 61 patients were discharged, bringing the total recoveries to 6,531.

The recovery rate in the country stood at 81.9% of overall cases.

Screening conducted at four immigration depot centres
The MoH said there were 4,908 samples taken from four immigration depot centres including in Bukit Jalil, Sepang, Semenyih and Putrajaya, where 466 people tested positive for the virus.

Of the 466 positive cases, 338 cases were detected at the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot Centre, 66 at the Semenyih Immigration Depot Centre, 60 at the Sepang Immigration Depot Centre, and two at the Putrajaya Immigration Depot Centre.

There were 465 cases involving non-citizens from India (123), Bangladesh (108), Indonesia (76), Myanmar (66), Pakistan (45), China (18), Sri Lanka (7), Nepal (5), Cambodia (4), the Philippines (3), Egypt (2), Laos (1), Nigeria (1), Libya (1) and Syria (1).

Noor Hisham said the ministry was in the process of updating the information, including the nationality, of the remaining four cases.
