KUALA LUMPUR (May 22): Malaysia’s daily new Covid-19 infections climbed to 78 as of noon today, of which 53 were local while 25 were imported cases. There were 50 new cases on Thursday.

Among the new infections, 40 involved migrant workers, 25 of whom were from the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot cluster, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot cluster currently has 60 infections in total.

The number of active Covid-19 cases is 1,163 versus 1,149 yesterday, according to the Ministry of Health, while the total number of infections increased to 7,137 as of noon today.

Meanwhile, Noor Hisham announced that 63 patients have been discharged today, raising the number of recoveries to 5,859, representing a recovery rate of 82.1%.

One new death was recorded, bringing the death toll to 115, translating into 1.61% of overall cases.

The deceased was a 65-year-old man who had diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney failure. He was pronounced dead at 2.58pm yesterday after getting treatment in Sungai Buloh Hospital.

So far, nine patients are being treated in intensive care units, while five of them are on respiratory assistance.
