KUALA LUMPUR (June 11): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases jumped to 31 today after three consecutive days of recording single-digit new infections, with 20 of the newest cases being local transmissions while the remaining 11 were imported cases, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

From the 20 local transmissions reported today, 19 cases involved foreign workers — 16 cases were detected from the Pedas cluster, one from a cleaning company here, one during a workers’ screening here, while one was detected among the Sungai Lui Village cluster in Selangor.

This means there was only one case involving a Malaysian, which was detected in Selangor during a screening at a tahfiz school, Noor Hisham told reporters at his daily briefing today.

Thus, the total cumulative cases in the country rose to 8,369.

Meanwhile, 11 imported cases today were recorded among Malaysians who have returned from Egypt, bringing the total imported cases to 566, he added.

There are currently 1,186 active cases in the country — the lowest since May 20 (1,189) — with the patients already isolated and given treatment.

This left five patients in intensive care, with none of them needing respiratory assistance.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) also reported 51 recoveries today, bringing the total recovered patients to 7,065, representing 84.4% of total cases.

MoH noted that there were no new deaths, maintaining the Covid-19 death toll in the country at 118, which represents 1.41% of overall cases.

On June 8 and 9, Malaysia reported only seven new cases of Covid-19; new infections fell to two yesterday, the lowest since the movement control order was imposed on March 18.
