KUALA LUMPUR (March 25): Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced 172 new confirmed infections as of noon today, bringing the total number of cases in Malaysia to 1,796 — the highest among Asean countries.
In a statement, Muhyiddin said Covid-19 positive cases have doubled in just a week — on March 18, there were 790 cases reported.
A total of 1,006 new cases were reported in the past one week since the start of Movement Control Order (MCO) period last week.
The increase today is the second-highest single-day increase reported since the imposition of the MCO; the highest rise of infections was 212 on Monday (March 23).
He also announced that the MCO has been extended to April 14 in light of the increasing number of infections.
“The death toll has also increased to 17, including a doctor, condolences to the family,” said Muhyiddin.
Since the MCO, 15 people have been confirmed dead from Covid-19, with five deaths alone reported on Saturday (March 21).
