KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 3): Malaysia reported today 1,704 newly confirmed Covid-19 cases, which brought the total number of infected individuals in the country to 119,077 so far. A total of 11 Covid-19-related deaths were reported today.

Healh director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said via Twitter today the 11 deaths brought the country's
cumulative number of Covid-19-related fatalities to 494 so far.

"The deceased comprise 10 Malaysians and one foreigner," Dr Noor Hisham said.

In a separate statement today, Dr Noor Hisham said the 1,704 newly confirmed Covid-19 infected individuals comprise five imported and 1,699 local-transmission cases respectively.

The total number of active Covid-19 cases in the country stood at 21,365 so far, according to him.

He said Selangor reported today the highest daily number of new cases with 673, followed by Sabah and Johor with 316 and 179 respectively.

Across Malaysia, 124 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units and out of the 124, 51 need breathing assistance, Dr Noor Hisham said.

"The Health Ministry wishes to announce that today the number of cases (patients), who have recovered from Covid-19, stood at 2,726 cases.

"This makes the total number of fully recovered cases at 97,218 [so far]," he said.

Meanwhile, the deceased today comprise seven men and four women aged between 53 and 77 years, he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said among the deceased, six were from Selangor, two each from Sabah and Johor and one from Kedah.

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded its highest daily number of persons that have recovered from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic with 3,321, which brought the total number of recoveries to 94,492 or 80.5% of the nation's total number of cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement yesterday Malaysia reported 2,295 newly confirmed Covid-19 cases.
