KUALA LUMPUR (March 30): Maxis Bhd no longer wants to be just Malaysia’s leading mobile operator and is moving aggressively into homes and are knocking on businesses’ doors offering converged communications and digital services.

CEO designate Gokhan Ogut, who will officially take the CEO chair come May 1, is steering Maxis from a mobile operator to a converged solutions company.

“The number one opportunity that we see is Maxis should be for everybody in Malaysia, for every home, company and everything. It’s not just about individuals but about companies, homes, government, things,” he tells The Edge in an interview.

There will be growing pains to its new strategy towards RM10 billion service revenue by 2023. Revenue this year is also expected to be lower due to smaller wholesale revenue following the termination of 3G RAN network sharing agreement with U Mobile, which will end by June this year.

Some analysts may already be pencilling in dividends that are smaller than the 20 sen per share that Maxis has been paying the past few years. Are they being overly bearish?

Find out how Ogut plans to secure Maxis a leading role in Malaysia’s digital future, in the latest issue of The Edge.
